In recognition of Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy, Congress in 1994 designated the Martin Luther King Jr. federal holiday as a National Day of Service. The commemoration of the MLK Day of Service is a call to Americans to volunteer in service to others within their communities.

If you'd like to participate in the MLK Day of Service, you can find service opportunities at https://americorps.gov/join/find-volunteer-opportunity#/.

In observance of the holiday, the Texas Real Estate Commission (TREC) and Texas Appraiser Licensing & Certification Board (TALCB) are closed on Monday, January 15. You can still access mylicense.trec.texas.gov to manage or renew your license, or contact us on January 16 when we resume normal operating hours.

A message from the executive director of TREC and TALCB:

“My daughter and I were talking about the long weekend ahead. I asked her if she knew why we had Monday off. She said, ‘No.’ It was a wonderful opportunity to talk about Martin Luther King, Jr. She was shocked that he died when he was a young dad, because of his civil rights work. The idea that someone would lose their life while fighting for rights of people because of their skin color blew her mind.

My hope is that our progress between now and the next generation is significant. And I hope we can all spend some time honoring the man who worked hard to make our world better.”
